WA foster care: data and reports

In Washington in 2020

  • ~8100 children in foster care
    • about 45% of children in foster care live with a kinship caregiver
    • 50% are in a licensed foster home
    • 6% live in non-family settings like group homes

  • There are ~5000 licensed foster homes
    • ~75% are licensed directly with the state
    • ~25% are licensed through private agencies,
    • but this varies enormously by geography (e.g Pierce County non-kinship is 50% private agency homes, Spokane County is 5%) [all figures are from pocdata.org].
